Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) is a very common type of welding in the oil industry. Usually referred to as “stick welding” this type of welding uses an electrode coated in flux and an electric current to produce a weld. It is probably one of the simplest and most versatile of all the welding process and you can have a huge impact on characteristics of base metal and weld deposit by selecting different electrodes. It is popular in the oil and gas industry because of its versatility and its ability to be used outdoors and on site. It can be qualified for all positions and close to any material combination.
