A live roll refers to the use of a pipe on bearings that freely spins to facilitate the loading and unloading of oilfield skids. It differs from a dead roll in the fact that the live roll rotates freely. Commonly installed at the rear most edge of bedtrucks or down the length of a truck or trailer with a winch on it.
