Drawworks – A large winch used to do the hoisting on a service rig or drilling rig. On a service rig, a drawworks will have two drums of cable – one for operating the blocks and one for using tools down the well. The drive mechanism can range from mechanical, hydraulic or electric depending on size and application.  What differentiates a drawworks from a more common winch is the speed at which it spools and the ability for it to free fall. This makes the drilling and service rig more efficient. The drawworks is governed by the API 7k code.
